Start here

Create your first map

Build a small venue with a floor, a shop and a café, then check the visitor experience.

1. Create a venue

You need an owner, admin or editor role to make changes. Start with a small area you know well; you can add more spaces and floors later.

  1. Open Venues in your workspace and choose New venue.
  2. Enter a venue name, such as Harbour Centre, then choose Create venue.
  3. The studio opens with an empty ground floor. Stay in Map mode to start drawing.

2. Draw a floor and two spaces

This is the same idea developed into a small venue. Start with just the floor, one shop and a café, then build from there.
  1. Choose Rectangle in the drawing palette, then choose the Floor preset. Drag a rectangle to form the base of your map.
  2. Choose the Space preset and draw a smaller rectangle inside the floor for a shop.
  3. Switch to Select and select the shop. In Geometry, set its dimensions if you know the measurements; distances are in metres.
  4. Draw another rectangle using Food / dining for a café. Leave a gap between the spaces to represent a walkway.

For keyboard creation, choose a drawing tool and use Add at centre, then enter its dimensions and position in Geometry. Undo reverses an unwanted edit.

3. Name your places

  1. Select the shop and open Place details. Name it Harbour Books and fill in the available visitor fields.
  2. Select the café and name it Quay Café. Give it a suitable category.
  3. Use the Label section to choose how each name appears on the map.
  4. Add a POI marker for an entrance or amenity: choose its icon, then click where it belongs.
  5. Choose Decoration to add a tree or planter for context. Select its type, then click to place it.

Spaces and POI markers get linked place information when you create them. Floors, walls, paths and decorations do not need a place. Keep descriptions short and useful, such as “Books, gifts and stationery near the main entrance.”

4. Preview and save

  1. Open Preview and search for Harbour Books. Select it and check its visitor card.
  2. Check that the café, entrance and labels are easy to find. Return to Map to make adjustments.
  3. Choose Save and wait for All changes saved.
  4. Keep the map as a private draft, or ask an owner or admin to publish it from Share when it is ready.
